When Gotham premiered five years ago, Batman fans everywhere rejoiced. The crime-drama series follows all the DC comics fan favorites from the Batman franchise — James Gordon, Bruce Wayne, Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and more. This year, the fifth and final season of the show will air, and executive producer John Stephens promises with going to be a “satisfying end”.
Let’s look back at the previous seasons:
Season One
In the inaugural season of Gotham, James “Jim” Gordon is a novice with the Gotham City Police Department and is paired with Harvey Bullock to solve the murders of Martha and Thomas Wayne. As in many classic crime shows, Jim is the by-the-book cop while his partner Harvey is more of the charmer, but has a corrupt mindset. Together, the pair get involved with mob boss Carmine Falcone and his partner Fish Mooney, and the Penguin returns to Gotham with the intent to carry out his revenge. As this story develops, other well-known Batman villains come into the picture, like Ian Hargrove, Harvey Dent, Scarecrow, and more. Jim is reassigned as an Arkham security guard and falls in love with Dr. Leslie Thompkins. This season also includes a few Joker fakeouts and copycats as well as an introduction to the notorious serial killer, “The Ogre.” The season ends with Fish Mooney falling to his death and Penguin triumphantly declaring himself the King of Gotham.
Season Two
The season starts with a new police commissioner firing Gordon, forcing him to work with Penguin again. This leads to him having to work through a series of events being orchestrated by new residents of Gotham City, Theo Galavan and Tabitha, as they try to seek revenge against the Wayne family. When Theo is murdered, the police department starts investigating reports of the weird actions of Victor Fries as he begins science experiments on his ill-stricken love, Nora. Underneath Arkham Asylum in the Indian Hill facility that is owned by Wayne Enterprises, more experiments begin to take place, including successfully reviving Fish Mooney. Jim is eventually able to shut down the facility with the help of Bruce Wayne, Alfred, and Lucius Fox.
Season Three
Six months later, Jim has become a bounty hunter in Gotham City. He is able to track down the escaped experiments from the Indian Hill facility, but Fish Mooney is able to escape again with Hugo Strange. During this time, Ivy grows into an adult woman after an encounter with Fish Mooney, and Jerome Valeska is revived to resume his attack on Gotham City. Jim is left to work with the Court of Owls, while Penguin and Ivy team up to form an army. The season ends with Edward Nygma embracing his new identity as legendary Batman villain, “The Riddler”.
Season Four
In the most recent season, Bruce Wayne starts to become a more-recognizable version of who he will become — Batman. Many villains pop up this season, including the Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, and Butch Gilzean, who becomes Soloman Grundy. When Professor Pyg comes to town, Gotham is in chaos until he comes forward that he is working against Penguin, which he and Sofia are successful at doing. The League of Horribles is formed to bring mass destruction to Gotham City. Eventually, Gotham City becomes a no man’s land and is overtaken with the different villains marking their territories.
Season Five
We’re so excited to see how the final season of Gotham will be wrapped up and are on the edge of our seat to see what happens to our favorite Batman villains.
